Okay, a couple of weeks ago I wrote a short post about purpose, which you can read Discover Purpose #1 and promised that I was going to take you on the journey to discovering purpose. Before the purpose I’m going to take you guys back. Before we get to the full understanding of what I shared back then you’ll need to understand this.
So this post is about what before you discover the purpose.
A lot of people don’t know what their purpose is and if they even have one.
Before you start stressing about that, it’s important to realize and be grateful for the things that you already do have in your life. If you’re not content with who you are or what you have right now, the journey to discovering purpose will be very frustrating, because no matter how high you will climb you will never be happy with where you will be.
So first start with listing a few things that you already have going for yourself whether it’s school, a job, a notebook and a pen, paper and crayons or even paint. Whether it’s a professional camera or just your smartphone. It could be a t-shirt and some markers, a laptop, internet or even an internet café near you. It could be an oven or a stove and 3 simple recipes. Think of the thing you have in your hand and be glad you have it. Take a picture of yourself with it and hang it up somewhere. Celebrate it, because soon you’ll look back to it and remember this moment. This is the beginning of your journey in life.
Before the purpose you need to do a SWOT analysis
Now the second thing you need to do before the purpose is to start thinking about is what you really like doing and what your good at. You need to do a SWOT analysis on yourself. This means asking yourself the following questions:
- What are my strengths?
- What are my weaknesses?
- Which opportunities do I have?
- What are my triggers?
It’d help if you make a little graph for yourself with all the things that come to mind when it comes to these four questions.
When you have a list for yourself, it makes it easier to know which of the many possibilities are things that you’d be good at and/ or the things that you absolutely shouldn’t do or just don’t want to do. It’s an easy way to make the overwhelming list of possibilities a lot smaller. It also gives you a good overview and a simple structure for a CV.
Before the purpose check your current responsibilities
The third thing you’ll have to consider are your current responsibilities. Dreaming about where you’re headed is really fun, but you can’t just abandon everything and follow your dream just yet. It is important to be wise when it comes to the decisions you make in life.
Before the purpose there is doing the things that are right in front of you. If it means finishing school, finish it. If it means cleaning your room: clean your room (you won’t be able to think with a messy room trust me). If you’re working make sure you’re doing your job really well. Focus on being a master at the things that you have to do right now. By mastering the things that you have on your plate right now, the stretch that you will make by starting to pursue your dream will be a healthy one.
Also by doing what is in front of you, your purpose will be revealed. In all things that you do: Keep your focus on the future, but put your energy into today.
That’s what I had to share for this week. Next time I’m going to go deeper on the mental health side of it all. I’m hoping it’ll help you a lot.
