The reason why it’s important to have vision is because vision is often the reason why we keep fighting. We see something that’s not yet there, but we really want it to be there. Vision turns uncertainty into possibility and God will turn the possibility into facts. You must be wondering how to discover vision for your life? In this post I’ll show you step by step how it’s done!
One thing I’ve learnt from job world is that bosses despise
the words “I don’t know” especially without the willingness to
find an answer.
There are times when I don’t know and I’ll go ask and
he’ll have an answer ready, but most times he’ll tell me
to find out and let him know when I come up with ideas.
In it I’ll usually have to try various options until I find
something that works; a lot of times I try to rush the solutions,
but good things don’t grow on short notice.
In this blog you will read about the following things:
- What vision is
- The reason why vision is essential
- How to find vision for your life
- A sneak peak into my vision journal
1. What is vision?
Vision is the moment you allow yourself to dream and plan without having any pressure. It’s your safe space to express all you want or don’t want in your life. It’s a moment for you with you. It’s a time that you set aside to try and fins what you enjoy most. It’s time you set aside to search, try, fail and learn. It’s not for anyone else. It’s for your own well-being.
Vision isn’t just on the inside, but you need to bring it out so that you have a
visual reminder of where you’re headed. This is for times when you struggle to motivate yourself and when it seems like you’re going nowhere and also for times when you feel super excited.
Having the vision in front of you courses to be intentional, focused and grounded you in all that you do, because the steps you take will have direct impact on where you’re headed.
It takes faith, time and consistent effort to get to your vision. Okay, if you’re someone
who struggles with consistency like me; don’t worry; you have time to build the routine, but before you can get to the solution; you need the vision. When you have the vision, it really helps if you start to break it down into smaller tasks that you can schedule over the course of a timeline of your own choosing. You really don’t have to compare your timeline to someone else’s, because that will get you nowhere.
Your main focus should be on working towards your goals. Your goals are different from other people’s, so comparing is only going to slow you down and demotivate you to live YOUR life.I once read in a book that your story is made decision by decision.
The story of your life is being written by you. Depending on the decisions you
make; your life is going to head towards a certain direction. So to put it out there: where you end up is determined by the decisions you make. So now that you have the chance: think about where you’re headed, write it down.
So you’re probably wondering how you should start working on a vision if you don’t even know what you want?
Vision is the moment when you allow yourself to dream and start looking for
a visual representation of the stories that are playing in your mind. By taking the time to work it out
you’re allowing yourself to believe that it’s possible. Once you allow
yourself to think it’s possible and put it on paper; you can start working
it out.
2. The reason why vision is essential
A lot of people know how to find solutions for problems or alternatives to try out at work, but when it comes to our own wants, needs or desires we usually just say “I don’t know” and leave it at that and wander around aimlessly.
When you’re at work your employer likes it when you have a pro-active attitude, it’s the same with yourself. If you think about it, most of the times you enjoy it when you already know what you’re going to eat tonight instead of having to start wondering while you’re super hungry and ending up getting take out. It gives a certain sense of peace to already know what you’re going to do.
Which doesn’t mean that when you put potatoes on the menu and you’re feeling like eating pasta you can’t have pasta, you can change your meal when you feel like it. The important thing is that you eat. It’s the same for vision: there is room for flexibility in your wants/ likes and schedule and there should always be there. In your changes you just need to make sure that your morals and values aren’t compromised by the changes you make to your plan.
So when you feel yourself loosing direction of where you’re headed, you need a reminder. Sometimes when you don’t know, instead of just saying I don’t know try and look for an answer.

3. How to find the vision for your life
Now we’ve got to the point where we can get our hands “dirty” and our hearts floating.
The things you’ll need:
- an afternoon (peaceful or stressed, because you’ll end up feeling at peace anyways)
- magazines
- a pair of scissors or an exacto knife ( I ended up using both at one point)
- Vision journal (which you can find in my shop)
- a cup of tea and some cookies (turn it into a self-care moment)
I set aside an afternoon.
I wrote down the various areas of my life: morals/values, family, career, friendships, relationship/marriage, church and home.
Then I walked to 3 different magazine shops and actually purchased magazines in those various areas of my life (it was my exercise of the day hehe). If you don’t want to purchase you can also look up stuff online, but I won’t lie there’s something special about looking in magazines and cutting them out. It helps me to be still and in the moment without an overflow of stimuli and distractions.

After going through all the magazines I also went on Pinterest and looked for quotes, pictures and even systems that I liked and printed them out. Also while you’re on Pinterest give me a follow here.
I spent some time organizing them and putting the matching pictures and quotes together. The things that I couldn’t find an immediate place or match for I put aside in a small file that I would come back to later.
After that I played the film of my future lifestyle in my mind and stuck the pictures in my vision book. According to the categories.
